For the past two or three years, Lahore’s real estate market has been climbing, and that has left many investors confused. The biggest worry is the fear of missing out: what if I buy now, the market crashes, and I’m stuck at the top?
I have a simple habit that helps me cut through the noise: look at the US Dollar Index (DXY) before you invest. This post explains what the index is, why it matters for property in Lahore, and how I read it today.
What is the US Dollar Index (DXY)?
The US Dollar Index measures the value of the US dollar against a basket of six major currencies: the euro, Japanese yen, British pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc. The euro carries the largest weight. The index started in 1973 at a base of 100 and is published by ICE.
When the DXY rises, the dollar is getting stronger around the world. When it falls, the dollar is getting weaker. The Pakistani rupee is not part of the basket, but the index is a quick way to see where the world’s main currency is heading.
Why does the dollar matter for Lahore property?
Because almost every major investment in Pakistan is measured, in one way or another, against the dollar. Capital flows, import costs and even the price of land are all tied to the dollar’s value. That’s why the dollar index often gives an early warning before the local market reacts. In practice, it shows up in three places:
- Overseas buyers. Many buyers earn abroad and send money home. The exchange rate decides how many rupees their savings buy, so dollar moves change how much property they can afford. See our guide for overseas Pakistanis.
- Building costs. Fuel and many construction inputs are imported and paid for in dollars, so the dollar feeds into what it costs to develop a society or build a house.
- Cash vs land. Savings held as cash rise or fall with their currency. Land is a physical asset, so its value doesn’t depend on a single currency.
| DXY rising | DXY falling | |
|---|---|---|
| What it means | The dollar is strengthening worldwide | The dollar is weakening worldwide |
| Idle dollars | Hold their value better | Lose buying power |
| Real assets like land | Less urgency to switch from cash | A stronger case for holding land over cash |
What do the 2014–2017 and 2022–2025 phases on the chart show?
On the chart below, I’ve marked two major correction phases, 2014 to 2017 and 2022 to 2025. These periods show how the dollar’s moves tend to signal what’s coming for markets like ours, so I use them as reference points when I look at where the index is now.

Is now a good time to invest in Lahore real estate?
My view: given how the world is shaping up, especially the US’s war-driven policies, I believe the dollar is likely to underperform over the next 6 months, 1 year, or even 1.5 years. Sitting on idle dollars in your account doesn’t look like a smart move right now.
In that kind of environment, tangible assets such as land and property have a good chance of holding their value better than the dollar. If you’re thinking about investing, choose real assets over cash, and do it with a plan, not out of panic.
Fear of a crash is natural. I wrote about acting calmly when others are worried in Buy when others are fearful: Lahore property in 2026.
How do you invest with a plan, not out of panic?
- Set your budget and holding period first. Decide how much you can commit and how long you can wait. Plots vs apartments in Lahore helps you choose what fits.
- Spread the cost if you need to. Installment plots let you enter with a smaller down payment. Compare plans in installment plots in Lahore compared and work out your payments with the payment plan calculator.
- Verify before you pay. Check approval, ownership and documents first. Follow our property verification checklist.
- Look at real options. Browse current listings in Lake City, Union Town and Etihad Town.
